about our alumni

The Meyerhoff Family is now more than 800 strong, with more than 600 alumni across the nation. Some are scientists and researchers, while others are physicians and teachers. All share the common bonds of striving for excellence and supporting one another.

The achievements of each Meyerhoff Scholar are impressive, and the sheer number of success stories makes the program a national leader in expanding diversity in science, engineering, and related disciplines.

As of July 2008, the program has achieved the following results:

Alumni from the program have earned 50 Ph.D.s, 21 M.D./Ph.D.s and 65 M.D.s. Thirty-eight of these Ph.D.s have been awarded between 2005 and the first half of 2008. Meyerhoff graduates have received these degrees from such institutions as Harvard, Stanford, Duke, the University of Pennsylvania, M.I.T., Berkeley, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Rice, NYU, and the University of Maryland, College Park.

Over 85 additional alumni have earned graduate degrees in Engineering, and nearly 300 alumni are currently enrolled in graduate and professional degree programs.

Two hundred fifty two students are currently enrolled in the program for the 2008–2009 academic year; of whom 53% are African American, 21% Caucasian, 21% Asian, 4% Hispanic, 1% Native American, and another 10% are Hispanic or other underrepresented minority group.

The program is having a dramatically positive impact on the number of minority students succeeding in STEM fields; students were 5.3 times more likely to have graduated from or be currently attending a STEM Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. program than those students who were invited to join the program but declined and attended another university .

The Meyerhoff Scholarship undergraduate and graduate programs are exemplary in fulfilling the UMBC mission of promoting academic excellence,”
