cohort giving challenge

To whom much is given, much is expected.

The academic and career achievements of Meyerhoff Scholars Program graduates speak volumes about the initiative’s impact. However, the level of support of the program by its own alumni is just as important in measuring the program’s success over time.

The Meyerhoff Cohort Giving Challenge presents an annual opportunity for alumni to demonstrate both their appreciation for the program that gave them so much, and their commitment to future Meyerhoff Scholars. In the spirit of healthy competition, the cohort with the highest participation of giving each year will be recognized on a plaque in the Scholarship Program office.

“When the final calculations were tallied, experience was the deciding factor,” said M4 Raymond Onley ’97, computer science, acting president of the Meyerhoff Alumni Advisory Board.

Congratulations to the M1s for winning the 2008 challenge!

2009 Cohort Giving Challenge Results (to date)

Giving charts will be updated monthly. The results below are as of January 16, 2009.

Why Give Back?

In a speech to his fellow alumni at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum during the 20th Anniversary weekend, William Christian, M3, Mathematics, explained his reasons for giving back to the program.

“Mr. Meyerhoff and his family and so many others have been very generous to us, and the whole point of the Meyerhoff Program is that we would develop into professionals and that we regenerate,” he said. “If every alum gave $45 we could pay for two scholarships. Now just imagine if you gave $100. Whatever your resources look like, that’s the kind of resources we need.”

In addition, alumni can contribute to the program in ways other than financial support. The Meyerhoff Alumni Advisory Board is in the process of creating an official UMBC alumni chapter. This group will work as a vehicle to develop a closer relationship with UMBC, the overall Alumni Association, and the Meyerhoff Scholars Program. Contact any member of the Advisory Board if you would like to join in the effort.

When I think of where I am today I know that I owe much to the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program and UMBC. This is where I grew up, learned to speak to a crowd, became a leader, made life-long friends, first gave serious thought to a Ph.D., and met the smartest people I know to this day.”

Kamili Jackson, M4,
Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University
Materials Assurance Engineer, Ball Aerospace

As I address the challenge of engaging minority youth who are under prepared for careers in science and technology in my career, the Meyerhoff Program inspires me by what is truly possible when we "think big."

Bruk Berhane, M10, Electrical Engineering
