The Meyerhoff Biomedical Fellows Program

“I could have just pursued an M.D., but the Meyerhoff Program’s emphasis on research helped me to realize that it is a powerful tool, that the biomedical sciences are what actually shapes the field of medicine. I decided to be a creator of knowledge, not just a recipient.”

Chester Hedgepeth, M1
Member of the First Class of Meyerhoff Scholars, and the First African-American to Earn an M.D./Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medial School

Who Are the Scholars?
Giving Back

The Meyerhoff Program challenges notions about minority achievement. The goals and success of the Meyerhoff Program have changed many students’ own minds about their academic and career aspirations. In turn, Meyerhoff Scholars have changed the perceptions of those around them—the expectations of faculty who instruct them, the attitudes of students who learn beside them, and the perspectives of scientists who engage them in research.
