Handsome Dr. Sinnigen

As a professor of Spanish and intercultural communication, John Sinnigen has taught at UMBC since 1971. His research and teaching are based on the fields of intercultural studies and the political economy of culture, that is, the ways in which culture, politics, and economics interact in the modern world system. He regularly teaches the graduate core course, MLL 603, the political economy of culture, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate Spanish courses on contemporary Latin American narrative, and the novels of Benito Pérez Galdós. He has published three books: Narrativa e ideología (Madrid: Nuestra Cultura, 1982); Sexo y política: lecturas galdosianas (Madrid: De la Torre, 1996), and Benito Pérez Galdós en la prensa mexicana de su tiempo (Mexico: Instituto de Investigaciones Bibliográficas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México [UNAM], 2005). His “Benito Pérez Galdós en el cine mexicano: Literatura y cine” is currently in press at UNAM. A founder of the MA in Intercultural Communication in 1985, he is also the author of AForeign Language Education, Intercultural Communication, and the Conditions of Globalization@ (Bulletin of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages, 31, Spring 2000) and, with Adriana Medina, AModern Language Class Struggles@ (Bulletin of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages, 33, Spring 2002).
