Simone Conwell
Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Career Plans: Med school - oncology

What made you want to join the ILE? I like French and would like to do more with it. I have a fear I won’t be able to take as many French classes as I’d like.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? My cousin-in-law is from Québec. A lot of my friends are Indian and I had some Russian friends.
Hobbies: Reading, cards, music, games, running around

Megan Cramer
Major: MLL Applied Linguistics
Career Plans: I believe I would like to get an internship with the NSA as a Linguist and see were that leads. Maybe work for foreign diplomacy.

What made you want to join the ILE? I wanted to have the option of being surrounded by other people with my major. I was hoping to get more incite on THEIR plans after college and have the benefit of a quiet floor. Also it seemed like a fun experience.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? My family and I went on vacation to Mexico and visited Chichén Itza. Even though we stayed in a resort the staff spoke Spanish and the guests were from all over the world. I have also taken 2 years of Spanish in high school and 3+ years of Latin.
Hobbies: Reading, embroidery, drawing/painting, sleeping

Melissa Stratton

What made you want to join the ILE?
To learn more about culture and be exposed to language on a day-to-day basis.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? I’ve been taking French for 7 years and have traveled to France in 10th grade. I’ve also taken Italian and Japanese for one year. I recently started studying German.
Hobbies: Drawing, writing, reading, etc

Christianna Stavroudis

Career Plans: graduate school; clinical research in language and aphasias/autism

What made you want to join the ILE? It provided a wonderful experience for preparing me for Germany (study abroad academic year 2006-2007). I’d now like to revive my high school French.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? I’ve lived abroad in Japan, studied abroad in Munich, Germany and I am involved in the Baltimore Greek-American community.
Hobbies: going to museums, going to the symphony, learning new languages, and I’ve started a running program J

Rong Jane Guan
Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Pre-Med)
Career Plans: Become a Cardiologist

What made you want to join the ILE? This is my second year. I appreciate the ILE sense of international community, where everyone is almost learning a new language and willing to help one another.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? I was born in Beijing, China, then I moved to Quebec, Canada for about 8 years, then I’ve lived in Maryland USA since high school.
Hobbies: I like to learn new languages and elements of their cultures, and to cook.

Jessica Brown
Major: Linguistics
Career Plans: Work with Computational Linguistics (ie: machine translation, corpus analysis, artificial intelligence, etc)

What made you want to join the ILE? I had already participated in the ILE program and had a fun and insightful experience.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? French language study 1st -12th grade, 4 semesters of Japanese at UMBC, just beginning Russian language study, learning Irish through self study, trying to find others interested in Manx

Jonathan Merkle

Career Plans: to work at a local software company, possibly founding my own small group of programmers

What made you want to join the ILE? My experiences from last year showed me what a great community the Ile is, so even with the absence of the Japanese cluster didn’t dissuade me from coming back.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? I have traveled abroad three times: to London, Paris and Normandy.

Nikki Webster
Major: French/Spanish dual major
Career Plans: Department of Defense, Education

What made you want to join the ILE? I wanted to be able to use foreign languages on a daily basis and meet new and interesting people. Also I hoped it would prepare me for study abroad, if I go.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? Only experience is with Vietnamese with my boyfriend’s family. I am learning a lot about Chinese culture from some of my new friends on the ILE floor.

What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? My family is Chinese (Cantonese). I have gone to visit family in Vietnam and have taken up to level 4 Spanish.

What made you want to join the ILE? Since I love languages and didn’t get to study abroad in Germany, I felt it would be the next best thing.

Michael Keel

What made you want to join the ILE? To learn more about Chinese culture. To learn to speak more Chinese.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? I am half Chinese. I speak fluent Thai and have lived in Thailand for half of my life. I’ve also taken 5 of Spanish and one year of Latin and I know a little Korean by doing Tae Kwon Do. I am taking Chinese now. I’ve been to Thailand, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Russia and Finland. I used to go to an international school in Thailand.
Hobbies: guitar, singing, photography, Tae Kwon Do and other martial arts.]

Mia Brown

Career Plans: I plan to attend law school after undergrad and follow through with practicing international law.

What made you want to join the ILE? I joined ILE because of the great opportunity this program provides to immerse yourself in a varied mixture of culture and language that does not exist anywhere else on campus.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? I grew up in a bicultural family: my mother is Chinese and my father Jewish. Coming from this background I’ve taken particular interest in worlds culture experiences which have led me to do extensive travel throughout China and regions of Europe. I have studies abroad twice in the past few years including a month in Oxford, England studying society and law, and a summer in Prague increasing my knowledge of European politics. Also, I spent a summer in Beijing completing an internship and travels.

What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? I studied in Taiwan for 14 years. I finished 8th grade in Taiwan. My family also speaks Chinese at home.

What made you want to join the ILE? The unique and wonderful community that ILE always brings together –living with an open and diverse group of people from all walks of life. Also to meet other people with a passion for studying Chinese.
What are your experiences with other languages/cultures? Studied Chinese for 8 years beginning with grade 9. Living in Taiwan for a year while attending a Chinese-language school in 2004-2005.
