PART II: THE STUDIO EXPERIENCE

National Standards for Arts Education:
Visual Arts Standard 1a:  Students will apply media, techniques and processes with sufficient skill, confidence, and sensitivity that their intentions are carried out in their artworks.

Visual Arts Standard 1b:  Students will conceive and create works of visual art that demonstrate an understanding of how the communication of their ideas relate to the media, techniques, and processes they use.

Objectives:

  • to express concepts in art, and use art elements and principles to create a self portrait of quality and unique personal style.
  • to further refine your painting skills and learn the technique of impasto.
  • to recognize quality craftsmanship in one’s own work and in the work of others.
  • to use the psychological impact of color to communicate the mood of the self portrait.

Assignment:
Paint a self portrait on 18x24 inch stretched canvas that says more about you than just what you look like.  Incorporate the use of impasto with any other techniques you have learned previously.  Make conscious decisions in the colors you choose to create a specific mood in your painting.

Preparation:
Look again at the examples of Mexican artists who painted self portraits.  Examine their approaches to both color and compositional structure. Consider what makes each painting unique and how the artist communicates a specific aspect of their personality.
Watch the demonstrations on stretching a canvas, preparing the canvas surface and the impasto technique.

 Procedure:
1. Develop your idea into a full-size 18x24 drawing on newsprint; plan your color scheme.
2. Stretch and prepare your canvas.
3. Draw out  your image with acrylic washes establishing your value pattern.
4. Develop your self portrait using the impasto technique and other techniques you have learned in this unit.
5. Sign the completed painting and prepare it for hanging with screw eyes and picture wire.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Use of compositional principles
  • Use of impasto technique
  • Effective and emotional use of color
  • Craftsmanship

A self-assessment sheet is to come in with this painting.
