Wind Ensemble Auditions

Time: TBD

Place: Performing Arts Humanities Building, room TBD

Use this link to sign up for an audition time: coming soon

Anyone interested in participating in UMBC Wind Ensemble, regardless of whether you have played for the group in previous years, must audition. Past participation in the ensemble does not guarantee you a spot in this year's group. You MUST sign up for an audition slot during the allotted time for your instrument (more info coming soon).

Audition requirements for wind ensemble are as follows:

  1. 2 scales of your choice that you feel best demonstrate your sound, range, and technique. Percussionists should prepare two octave scales on a mallet instrument of their choice.
  2. 1-2 minute excerpt of your choice that best demonstrates your sound, range, technique, and overall musicianship. It can be from a solo work, an ensemble work, etude book, etc. If you're auditioning on more than one instrument from the same instrument family (e.g. alto/tenor sax or flute/piccolo) then you need only meet this requirement on one of the instruments. I strongly recommend picking something you already know well and feel confident performing. Percussionists should meet this requirements on a mallet instrument of their choice.
  3. REQUIRED EXCERPT (NEW) - All interested in participating in wind ensemble must prepare the excerpt selected for your instrument. If you are auditioning on more than one instrument (e.g. alto/tenor sax or flute/piccolo) you must play the excerpt for EACH instrument for which you wish to be considered. Each excerpt is approximately 30 bars in length and is from music that I hope to perform with the group this Fall. I've included some recordings for your reference below.

Alto Saxophone

Tenor Saxophone

Baritone Saxophone

Bb Trumpet- the excerpt from both the 1st and 2nd movements are required. m.98 to end of the 1st movement is OPTIONAL.

Euphonium (bass clef or treble clef)

Percussion - Snare Drum (you will also be asked some snare drum rudiments and sight-reading on timpani)

Reference Recordings for Required Excerpts:

Schoenberg- Theme and Variations, Op. 43

Shostakovich- Festive Overture (trans. Hunsberger)

Gordon Jacob- Original Suite
