The UMBC Wind Ensemble
Richard Spece, Director
The UMBC Wind Ensemble provides a wide range of music performance experiences, and is open to both music majors and non-majors. The Wind Ensemble is also open to members of the community. Auditions are held in the first week of both Fall and Spring semesters

The UMBC Wind Ensemble is comprised of exceptional woodwind, brass and percussion performers who enjoy the challenge of performing excellent concert literature.

The UMBC Wind Ensemble offers students an opportunity to perform substantive music of various instrumentation and styles. The students will perform a broad array of music literature both traditional and non-traditional, from the Renaissance to the present, as a basis for broadening their understanding, appreciation, and ability to perform all types of musical styles. The UMBC Wind Ensemble has a flexible approach to instrumentation, allowing for stylistic accuracy in the performance of everything from the large military band works of Gustav Holst to the chamber wind pieces of Mozart and Mendelssohn. The UMBC Wind Ensemble is also dedicated to the research and performance of the music of our time.

Richard Spece has an extensive history of performing in wind ensembles starting with the Greater Portland Youth Wind Ensemble in Portland, Oregon in the early 1980’s, under the baton of the esteemed Dr. Bill Tuttle. He has also performed and recorded with renowned wind ensemble conductors including, Tim Salzman, Ray Cramer, and Frederick Fennell. For the last ten years, Spece has directed numerous ensembles including university wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, and community bands in Washington State and Texas, and currently directs various wind, string, and chamber ensembles for the DC Youth Orchestra Program in Washington, DC.
