Jazz Ensemble

lafayettegilchrist@comcast.net

Keyboarder/Composer Lafayette Gilchrist has been playing his own unique brand of jazz-inspired music for more than ten years now and has been an active performer in and around the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. Born and raised in Washington D.C., this young self-taught musician has released under his own label two hotly regarded CDs, The Art is Life and Asphalt Revolt and now haunts the clubs of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. Recently, Lafayette has been working with Grammy-award-winning saxophonist/composer/band leader David Murray as a featured performer in his current octet. David Murray, who has graced the covers of both Jazz Times and Down Beat magazines for years, has long been on the cutting edge of creative music and with over 200 albums to his credit, David Murray is bringing Lafayette Gilchrist into a whole new and wider world of creative playing and writing. Layfette has also had the privilege of performing with such notables as:

€ Craig Harris - outstanding trombonist, composer, and bandleader, who has been a featured soloist with the great South African pianist/composer Abdullah Ibrahim; with Sun Ra and his Arkestra; and with the pianist Cecil Taylor

€ Oliver Lake - alto saxophonist, composer, and founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet

€ Fontella Bass - legendary gospel and R&B diva

€James Spaulding - alto saxophonist known for his recordings with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Freddy Hubbard, Horace Silver, and Max Roach
