THE UMBC CONCERT BAND (Wind Ensemble)
The UMBC Concert Band is comprised of the standard concert band instrumentation which includes woodwinds, brass and percussion. Membership is by audition, and participation is open to all UMBC students. The Concert Band performs regularly each semester on stage in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
Course Objectives
To develop and refine musicianship and musical growth through participation in a concert band setting. This includes rehearsals and performances. To help students make better musical decisions through experiencing and performing a wide variety of musical styles presented.
Rehearsals
Concert Band rehearses Mondays from 7 PM to 10 PM in the UMBC Fine Arts building. Additional sectional rehearsals may be scheduled as needed. Members are responsible for knowing their rehearsal and concert schedules and are expected to have the necessary equipment and music needed for each rehearsal.
Attendance and Grading Policies
Attendance at all rehearsals is required. The only acceptable excuses are those which involve illness or university sponsored obligations. It is a student’s responsibility to inform the director by e-mail or phone and to make appropriate arrangements with music or equipment, so that other members are able to perform, in the event of an absence. Unexcused absences will result in a lowered final grade. Other factors taken into account in terms of grading are prompt rehearsal attendance, preparedness, attitude, and performance. A final performing exam may be scheduled, however, the concerts are the final exam. An unexcused absence from a dress rehearsal and/or performance will result in a failing grade for the semester.
E-mails and the website are the best way to communicate with all band members. Students must have a school e-mail address and an optional secondary address if desired. Students are responsible for checking e-mails and responding back when asked. Notices sent via e-mail will be considered official notices from the director. If a rehearsal needs to be canceled, notification will be made by e-mail as early as possible and a note posted on the door. It will be rare that a rehearsal will be canceled at the very last minute.
