Dr. Thomas E. Hawley, Jr. earned a BA from Campbell University, BM and MM from East Carolina University, PhD from UMBC, and was a Fulbright Scholar at the School of Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg, Germany. He is an Ethnomusicologist specializing in early African American Gullah spirituals. Dr. Hawley was director of Music and Organist at historic Mt. Vernon Place UMC in Baltimore for eleven years. He is also a Board Certified Music Therapist working with Alzheimer patients. He has been teaching at UMBC for 17 years.

He is currently organist at Timonium United Methodist Church and Sub-Dean of the Baltimore Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
