Welcome
to the new website for the Music Department at the University
of Maryland, Baltimore County. Whether you are looking for concerts
to attend, or looking for information on attending UMBC as a music
major, I hope you will find this site useful.
UMBC's Music Department provides the one-on-one attention undergraduates
need to flourish as young musicians within the resources of a
small research university. So we provide excellent large ensembles
(a symphony orchestra, a concert choir, the Jubilee Singers, and
a big band) balanced with small classes in music theory, musicianship,
and music history. Our newest ensemble, the UMBC Chamber Players,
unites musicians from across campus, regardless of major, in performing
music from the vast chamber repertoire. And other ensembles, including
the new music ensemble, the percussion ensemble, the Maryland
Camerata, the opera, and the jazz ensemble, allow students to
hone their musical skills in a small group setting. To experience
music from a different cultural perspective, we encourage students
to spend some time in the gamelan, the Chinese-Korean ensemble,
or the African drumming ensemble.
UMBC
music faculty are renowned musicians who also love to teach. We
look forward to meeting you, whether it's at a concert or an audition!
Yours,
Dr. Linda Dusman
Professor and Chair,
Music Department
