A. Hrabowski, III was the keynote speaker at the National Institute
of Health's (NIH) 2002 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Program
on Monday, January 14.Click here to see the video. The theme of the observance was Unity in Diversity: We Shall Overcome. Dr. Ruth L. Kirschstein, Acting Director, NIH introduced Dr. Hrabowski III, who serves as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, The National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences, and the U.S. Department of Education. Also a child-leader in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Hrabowski was prominently featured in Spike Lee's 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls. UMBC has received numerous awards (eg. The U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring) in recognition of the nationally acclaimed, multi-million dollar Meyerhoff Scholars Program for gifted African American undergraduates in science and engineering. The UMBC Gospel Choir also performed at the event. |
