$1-Million Gift Launches Entrepreneurship Center at UMBC
May 9, 2000 - Baltimore investment bank Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown celebrated its 200th anniversary with $5.5 million in charitable donations, including a $1-million gift to UMBC to endow the Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown Center for Technology and Science Entrepreneurship.
The new center will introduce students to the concepts of entrepreneurism and offer internships and contact with leaders in the business community. The center will provide an educational forum for students to gain the knowledge, mindset, and skills that will enable them to capitalize on entrepreneurial opportunities, whether by starting their own company or by assuming an entrepreneurial position in a new or established business.
UMBC was recently featured in a Chronicle of Higher Education story along with Harvard and Cornell as universities focusing attention on student entrepreneurs. Currently, a student entrepreneur has a start-up company based in the University's Technology Center on South Campus. The Division of Professional Education also piloted a business-mentoring program for undergraduates two years ago.
Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown is America's oldest investment bank. Mayo Shattuck, co-head of Global Investment Banking for Deutsche Banc and co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown, is a member of the UMBC President's Board of Visitors.
