UMBC Named One of Best 50 Colleges for Women

 

September 28, 2004 – UMBC’s array of programs empowering women to be successful in college and professional life has been recognized nationally by CosmoGIRL! magazine’s new guide to the best colleges for women.

In compiling the “Best 50” list, CosmoGIRL! editors considered factors that “give girls an edge,” including small class size, prominent female faculty members, strong women's sports programs, a career center that facilitates internship opportunities, access to leadership positions, and an active alumni network. UMBC is joined on the list by such institutions as Amherst, Brown, Duke, Stanford, Berkeley, University of Virginia, and University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.


In addition to performing well on CosmoGIRL!’s key criteria, UMBC impressed the magazine’s editors with innovative programs that build a culture of achievement for women. Courses in the UMBC Women’s Studies Program attract both men and women from a broad range of majors, enhancing understanding of gender issues on campus and in society. The Center for Women and Information Technology (CWIT) encourages women’s full participation in all aspects of information technology from middle school into the workforce. Women Involved in Learning and Leadership (WILL) is a learning community that promotes academic excellence, leadership development, career exploration, and civic engagement on women’s issues. The UMBC Alumni Association’s popular “Backpack to Briefcase” program offers students the opportunity to network with successful University graduates. UMBC is also one of only 16 schools in the U.S. selected by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to sponsor an ADVANCE program to support the recruitment and advancement of women faculty in science, technology, engineering, and math.
