UMBC Professor One of Six State Department Jefferson Science Fellows

 

March 19, 2007 - Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Katherine Seley-Radtke is one of only six 2006-07 Jefferson Science Fellows selected by the U.S. Department of State, an honor that now keeps her busy working to prevent global proliferation of biological weapons of mass destruction.

Seley-Radtke chose an assignment with the Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction in the State Department's Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. Her first task as a Fellow was to lead an international team of experts to Indonesia to provide scientific and engineering expertise on biosafety and biosecurity issues at several key institutes.

Seley-Radtke's next stop was Russia, where her prior experience working with the U.S. Department of Defense on Russian nonproliferation issues served her well. She met with top scientists, government and ministry officials, and high-ranking members of the Russian Academy of Sciences on funding and future priorities for Russian scientific research.

When she is not overseas, Seley-Radtke participates in State Department and other federal agency meetings and critically reviews and writes documents and briefs related to her fellowship. On weekends she continues to meet with her UMBC graduate students, while keeping up on grants, papers, scientific literature and letters of recommendation for her students' applications to graduate, professional and summer research programs.

"As a Jefferson Fellow, Katherine Seley-Radtke is providing an important scientific voice for foreign policy," said Ralph Pollack, UMBC professor and chair of chemistry and biochemistry. "Her ability to do so while keeping her research laboratory active and productive is truly exemplary."
