Time Magazine Names President Hrabowski One of the Nation’s Ten Best College Presidents
December 1, 2009 - President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, has been recognized as one of the nation’s top ten college presidents by Time Magazine. The list, which appears in the November 23, 2009 issue, also includes presidents from Ohio State University, New York University, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Arizona State University, Tulane University, Middlebury College, Miami Dade College, University of Texas at Brownsville and and the University of California System.
The Time feature describes Hrabowski as a “charismatic leader” of an institution known for its research in science and engineering that also has strong programs in the arts, humanities and social sciences. UMBC is a leader in providing opportunities for all undergraduates across disciplines to receive an honors experience, including research opportunities, learning communities and access to faculty and individual attention usually found at smaller liberal arts colleges. The University is a model for increasing the number of minorities in sciences and engineering, and nearly 50 percent of its seniors go on to graduate school.
Hrabowski has served as UMBC’s president since May 1992. In 2008, he was named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report, which in 2009 ranked UMBC the #1 “Up and Coming” university in the nation and fourth among all colleges and universities in the nation for commitment to undergraduate teaching.
