B.S., Mathematics
Honors Certificate

Plans: University of Oxford, M.Sc. in Mathematics and the Foundations of Computer Science

Why did you choose to attend UMBC?
I chose UMBC because of the financial support I received, the medium-sized campus, and the opportunities available through the Honors College. My visit with Dr. Keller at the Honors College and Dr. Rostamian (then chair) of the math department finalized my decision.

What are your future goals or dreams?
I plan to study for a Master's degree at the University of Oxford beginning next October. At the same time, I hope to travel around a little and see more of the world.  Afterwards, I plan to enroll in a doctoral program in pure mathematics. My ultimate goal is to be a teacher and researcher at a top tier university.

Faculty mentors who made a difference:
Many of the faculty at UMBC have made a strong and lasting impression on me. Dr. Thomas Armstrong has been a mentor to me for my entire time here at UMBC. Lately, he helped me learn topology in independent study and worked with me as my advisor for my senior thesis. He has been very accessible and available to talk about anything mathematical.

Dr. Charles Toll is responsible for introducing me to much of what I consider beautiful in mathematics.  He is an adept lecturer, but I will remember him best as a mentor and tutor. I learned geometry and abstract algebra from him, and I cannot overstate his influence on my education. Dr. Toll also took time out of his evenings to answer my questions in an independent study course, to advise me with regard to graduate schools, and to lend me books and articles.

Dr. Muddappa Gowda has been a fantastic teacher.  He always approached the chalk board with a clear mental plan and his lectures came off as polished and effortless. I aspire to teach like him someday.

Finally, I would like to mention the Honors College staff for their support and advice.  Dr. Keller, especially, encouraged me to set my goals high and broaden my horizons. She always expressed confidence in my abilities.
