Maurice Butler

Hometown: Kettering, MD

B.S., Biological Sciences

Plans: Harvard Medical School, Ph.D., Biological and Biomedical Sciences

Why did you choose to attend UMBC?
I was accepted to Brown University, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and North Carolina A&T. I chose UMBC because of the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program. The unique combination of a competitive education with such a high level of personal, academic and financial support was unmatched by any other school.

What are your future goals or dreams?
This summer, I'll be starting the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) Ph.D.  Program at Harvard Medical School.  Once I've completed my graduate education, I'd like to go into the development of biomedical science policy.

Faculty mentors who made a difference:
Several of the faculty members have been refreshingly down-to-earth and approachable. Faculty members who have had direct impacts as mentors include John Kloetzel from the Biological Sciences Department, Dr. Michael Sierks from the Biochemical Engineering Department, Mr. Lamont Toliver and Mrs. Earnestine Baker from the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program, and Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, III.

Honors and Awards:
Meyerhoff Scholarship
MARC U*STAR Scholarship
Dean's List
Award for Outstanding Graduating Seniors in Biological Sciences
Golden Key National Honor Society
Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society

Extracurricular activities:
Black Student Union
Learning Resource Center
Mentorship Program at Catonsville Middle School

During my summers, I've done biomedical  research at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the NIH, the University of Iowa, and the Sackler Institute at New York University.
