Garrett Wright

Hometown:  Bowie, Maryland

Linehan Artist Scholar

B.A., Theatre
Certificate in Women's Studies

Why did you choose to attend UMBC?
“An exceptional theatre program, with high quality faculty and small class sizes. I was awarded an Artist Scholar scholarship to attend UMBC.”

What are your future goals or dreams?
“I currently work as an intern with the Theatre for A New Generation program at Center Stage in Baltimore, and am also appearing as the Bell Hop in their production of Oliver Goldstick's ‘Dinah Was.’ I am planning on pursuing a career with the labor movement as an organizer, researcher and activist.”

Faculty mentors who made a difference:
“Theatre chair Wendy Salkind was instrumental in my development as a well-rounded theatre practitioner. She always supported my work inside an outside of the classroom - as an actor, director and political activist.

Women's Studies director Dr. Carole McCann encouraged my interest in feminist scholarship and activism. She enabled me to synthesize my love of theatre with my drive for progressive social justice.”

Extracurricular Activities:
Wright appeared in the major motion picture “The Runaway Bride” alongside Julia Roberts. He has also performed in numerous plays, including The Diary of A Scoundrel, Mamet, Tartuffe, Agamemnon, The Sea Gull, Six Degrees of Separation, Cloud Nine and Orpheus. He was involved with several organizations and committees, including the Theatre Council of Majors, Progressive Action Committee, UMBC Green Party, Women's Studies Coordinating Committee, the Provost's Undergraduate Council and the Student Life Task Force. For his senior project in Theatre and Women's Studies, he directed Naomi Wallace's play Slaughter City. Wright’s research article on my process as a feminist director appeared recently in the UMBC Review.
