Richard Chilsom and Wiliam Whiteford    Creating Visual Poetry and Compelling Stories
Two award-winning filmmakers, Richard Chisolm, interdisciplinary studies '82 and William Whiteford, interdisciplinary studies '80, were honored as this years' Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Learn why both give credit to UMBC's interdisciplinary studies program for developing their creative talents.

Second To None
As the city's executive vice president of the Baltimore Community Development Financing Corporation, Gary M. Brooks, history '79, is devoted to improving Baltimore area youth and is the recipient of this year's UMBC Community Leadership award.

Identifying Opportunity
Scott E. Weber, interdisciplinary studies '85, began at UMBC with a plan to start his own magazine. Now, selected as UMBC's Volunteer of the Year, he is president and co-founder of Physicians Practice Inc., publisher of the Physician's Practice Digest.

Taking Things Seriously
Karen Johnson, political science '85, the recipient of this year's UMBC Outstanding Alumna Award and Secretary of Higher Education for the Maryland Higher Education Commission, looks back on her success.

Teamwork and Discipline Shape Athletic Hall of Famers
On February 3, Jackie Abendschoen Milani, psychology '88, Jason Smith, history '95, Dave Miller, economics '96 and Denise Schilte, economics '96, were inducted into the UMBC Athletic Hall of Fame. Find out how each of these athletes brought unique strengths to the playing field or the swimming pool as they share their UMBC experience.

A UMBC Legacy
Taken on her own, Maureen McCormick, English '91, is by any measure an active and vital member of the UMBC community. Expand the view, however, and a far richer legacy is revealed. All of Maureen's four children, as well as one in-law, have attended UMBC.

"Sweethearts" Of UMBC
Many couples have began their lives together at UMBC. Two pairs who met in the mid-80s, however, share a different significant date. Find out what anniversary Patti (Hicks) LeConte, political science '90, Brian LeConte, engineering '89, Dwayne Price, information systems '87 and Lisa (Dates) Price, information systems '87, have in common.

Connected to the Campus
In Baltimore on a temporary student visa during the Vietnam war, Bach-Tuiet Tran-Jeffrey, biology '79, found a deep sense of community at UMBC and biology faculty who sparked her drive to succeed.

Writing for Education
Leslie Walker Wilson, psychology '74 and '76, has found her niche as the supervisor of testing for Howard County Public Schools. Although her 45,000 "children" keep her busy, she is also writing a book for Eye on Education.
