As the city's executive vice president of the Baltimore Community Development Financing Corporation,
Gary M. Brooks, history '79, is devoted to improving Baltimore area youth and is the recipient
of this year's UMBC Community Leadership award.
Identifying Opportunity
Scott E. Weber, interdisciplinary studies '85, began at UMBC with a plan to start his own magazine.
Now, selected as UMBC's Volunteer of the Year, he is president and co-founder of Physicians Practice Inc.,
publisher of the Physician's Practice Digest.

A UMBC Legacy
Taken on her own, Maureen McCormick, English '91, is by any measure an active and vital member
of the UMBC community. Expand the view, however, and a far richer legacy is revealed. All of Maureen's
four children, as well as one in-law, have attended UMBC.

In Baltimore on a temporary student visa during the Vietnam war, Bach-Tuiet Tran-Jeffrey, biology '79, found a deep sense of community at UMBC and biology faculty who sparked her drive to succeed.
Writing for Education
Leslie Walker Wilson, psychology '74 and '76, has found her niche as the supervisor of testing for Howard
County Public Schools. Although her 45,000 "children" keep her busy, she is also writing a book for Eye on Education.
