UMBC Named a Newsweek ‘Hot School’
UMBC has been named one of a dozen “Hot Schools" by the Kaplan/Newsweek
2003 “How to Get Into College" guide, which hit newsstands
across the country on Aug. 26. UMBC joins prestigious company on the list
of “Hot Schools,” including the University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill; Boston College; the University of California at Santa Barbara;
Pepperdine and Arizona State University. This year’s schools were
selected based on quality, value, location and popularity. The article
credits a variety of factors that have helped UMBC build a strong national
reputation, including creating an environment where “it’s
cool to be smart.” Freshman applications to UMBC have risen steadily
over the past decade, as have students’ academic credentials. The
average SAT score of the current freshman class is 1220, and the average
SAT score for new students in the Honors College is 1400. Also, a boom
in campus housing construction is bringing a new vitality to campus life
with 75 percent of the freshman class living on campus. The 2003 issue
marks the second time UMBC has been recognized by the Kaplan/Newsweek
Guide. The 1999 issue called UMBC “a powerhouse in Baltimore”
as part of a list of “Schools on a Mission.”

Thank you, Alumni Donors!
In our first-ever capital campaign, which ended on June 30, UMBC met
and exceeded its fundraising goal of $50 million, reaching more than $66
million and increasing our endowment to $17.9 million. Many of our alumni
contributed to The Campaign for UMBC, making this success possible. The
monies raised by alumni during The Campaign for UMBC have supported services
that help today’s students succeed, personally and academically,
including scholarships, student services, academic departments and athletics. This
fall, you can expect to hear from our phonathon callers asking for your
support of the UMBC Annual Fund. You can also make a gift online anytime
and find out more about the Annual Fund and other giving opportunities
at www.umbc.edu/giving. A list
of alumni donors from the 2001 – 2002 fiscal year begins on p. 10.
