Teacher-scholar Ram Mohan, Ph.D. chemistry '92, is the 2002 UMBC Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Inspired by a professor here at UMBC, he is now taking his own undergraduate students to new heights in research.

Paul Behrens, M.A. biological sciences '80 and Ph.D. biological sciences '83, was honored with this year's UMBC Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Elsa Collins, M.A. instructional systems development '85, is the recipient of the UMBC Alumni Community Leadership Award for her work as an instructor of English for Speakers of Other Languages.

Michael Rowe, psychology '78, and Emmerson Small, economics '74, were named Volunteers of the Year for their service to UMBC's athletics program and their dedication to student-athletes.

UMBC has established a scholarship fund in memory of Angela Houtz, English '96, who was tragically killed while working in the Pentagon as a naval intelligence analyst on Sept. 11.
