      Candlelight Vigil

Hours after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, more than a thousand students, faculty and staff, in shock from the day's tragic events, assembled in the University Center Ballroom. A teach-in led by professors Lou Cantori, an expert on Middle East politics, and Christopher Hewitt, an expert on terrorism, was the beginning of an ongoing, across-campus effort to inform, support and reassure members of the UMBC community in a time of national uncertainty and fear.

In the days and weeks that followed, the University and its student leaders held a candlelight vigil, speak-out and memorial service. The Counseling Center offered its services. Students donated blood and organized a benefit concert to support the American Red Cross. Faculty led more teach-ins on terrorism and the war in Afghanistan.

"We are a community deeply committed to learning and caring--values reinforced by the recent events," said President Freeman Hrabowski in a message to alumni. "Our students, along with faculty and staff, have responded to the national crisis with constructive dialogue and compassion. By their words and actions, they are proving themselves to be bright lights and sources of hope for our future. I know you share my pride in all of them."
