 Achieving Her Goals STAT
By Arnold T. Blumberg
English '93

Success for Laura Frye, psychology '96, was inevitable. "Thanks to my family, I'm incredibly motivated. I was always thinking about my future," says Frye. At the age of 24, she holds the position of human resources manager for Rural/Metro Ambulance, where she's worked for two years; she even has a staff.

Frye knew what she wanted out of college as well. "From day one I was taking courses in my major, psychology, with a concentration in industrial and personnel relations. I graduated with exactly 120 credits, kind of pathetic," she adds jokingly.

Frye was at the forefront of an active campus. In her senior year, she served as vice president for Habitat for Humanity. Frye was also a member of Psi Chi, the national honor society of psychology majors. She also worked at the University Center, making important connections through the Student Events Board.

Frye credits the University Center staff with providing a professional environment. "They taught me about the real world, but allowed me to be a student." The curriculum at UMBC was also a major factor. "My goal when I got out of college was to eventually become a human resources manager, so I chose classes that concentrated on real-world skills. UMBC definitely prepared me for professional life."

Her career took off almost immediately. "I always say I'm one of the luckiest people in the world. My first job was as a recruiter," Frye explains. "Three months later I received a call from a former co-worker from UMBC. He told me about the position with the ambulance company."

"They already had someone lined up, but my friend got me an interview. He coached me on what they were looking for and where to focus. This is one of the reasons I'm so `gung-ho' about networking while you're still in college," says Frye. "It worked for me!"

What happens when life exceeds your expectations? "I never thought I'd have this position so quickly, so I've rethought where to go from here. The next step is to be director of a large human resources department; many companies even have vice presidents of human resources. As long as I enjoy what I'm doing, I'll stay in the field. I have a lot to learn, however, and I'm going to take my time making it to the next step." Thanks to her UMBC background and steadfast determination, Frye is certain to continue meeting and exceeding her goals.
