A UMBC Math Major's Mobile Masterpiece
David Oros'85, founder and president of a hot new
start-up, Aether Technologies, admits that as a math
major at UMBC in the early 1980s, "I wasn't the
greatest student in the world." But even then, he
had entrepreneurial leanings, spearheading an effort
to quadruple ad revenues for The Retriever.
Two years ago, after a 12-year stint at Westinghouse as an "intrapreneur," where he became adept at nurturing new ventures, Oros struck out on his own. His concept: develop mobile communications products for stockbrokers and traders that allow them to follow currency exchange
markets and other financial data 24 hours a day. It was
the right idea at the right time. The first product, AirBroker(TM), a voice-data telephone, has been a hit. The company has raised $3.5-million in private venture capital.
Aether's newest launch, MoneyClip(TM), is even more robust. The palm-sized device offers real-time stock quotes, news, options information, and analytical tools for brokers and active traders. Oros expects company revenues to soar from roughly $5-million this year to $15-million next year. The leap would enable Aether to turn a profit -- not a bad track record for a technology start-up.
