This new facility to be located in the new academic mall on the East
Side of campus will compliment its neighboring building the home of Physics. It is envisioned that this
facility would be four stories above grade and one below with brick
façade.
The building will house the Shriver Center with 4,295 NASF;
Sociology and Anthropology
with 4,735; Economics with
4,375 NASF, Political
Science with 3,115 NASF; Policy Sciences/MIPAR
with 5,385 NASF; and general purpose classrooms with 6,600 NASF; In
addition the building will have general support with 2,800 NASF for
a total NASF of 34,505 and a GSF of approximately 57,500.
These public policy related units are currently located in restricted
spaces which impact grant activity, faculty appointment,
teaching/learning activities and public service opportunies. The Shriver
Center is a public outreach component which provides national leadership
in work-and-service learning, Recently relocated from Chemistry to the
Surge Building. By placing the programs together, UMBC maximizes its potential for new
collaborative projects, interdisciplinary research and efficient use of
resources. This mix of space provides a central place on campus that can
serve as a magnet for attracting discussion and debate about public
policy issues.
The project is being designed by Cho, Benn & Holback, Inc
of Baltimore. The Construction Manager (CM) is Whiting-Turner of Baltimore.
