Commuting Resources

UMBC students who are interested in carpooling to and from campus with other students can visit the myUMBC "Casual Carpooling" group at http://my.umbc.edu/groups/casualcarpooling. Students can post carpool ride wants or offers in the discussions.

After making initial contact through the myUMBC group, set up a time to meet in a public place and discuss the following questions:

  • How often would you like to carpool?
  • Who wants to drive and how often?
  • What will be the meet up/pickup time and place for both ends of the commute?

Carpoolers should also consider "carpooling etiquette" related to smoking, radio volume, being late, etc.

If it looks like everyone wants to give carpooling a try, the next steps are to choose a start date and verify each others' driver's license, red UMBC ID, car insurance, and vehicle.

Students who wish to carpool together frequently can register for a UMBC carpool parking permit through Parking Services which entitles them to designated parking spaces in Lot 1. For more information about carpool permits and parking, visit the Parking Services website at www.umbc.edu/parking or call 410-455-2551.
