Instructors:
For students with hearing impairments, test your media at least a week in
advance for closed captioning or subtitles in the actual classroom. Rooms with
built-in data projection do not have closed captioning, but with advance notice
a solution can be provided.
VHS Tapes - If you are in a room with a TV/VCR, you will need a remote to turn
on closed captioning. If you are not sure how to activate closed
captioning in your classroom, contact AV Services and provide the VHS tape in
question. AV Services will need at least 48 hours notice.
DVDs - Please check the DVD menu to determine that English subtitles are
available to display. All classrooms with DVD players should have a remote or
menu buttons available to enable subtitles. Subtitles are a function of each
disk, not the player.
If your media does not have closed captioning or subtitles, you may contact
Student Support Services to determine if there are alternate accommodations
available for the student. SSS will need
48 hours notice to provide alternative accommodations.
Students
Please alert your instructor to your need for videos with closed captioning as
an accommodation during the first week of classes so they have time to prepare
and examine their materials. Please examine the course syllabus and remind the
instructor a week ahead of any scheduled class video showings. The instructor
should be the one contacting AV Services with technical questions, since they
have the media in question. If their materials do not have closed captioning or
subtitles, you may contact Student Support Services at least 48 hours in
advance to determine if there are alternate accommodations available
General notes about closed captioning for all:
Not all VHS tapes have closed captioning. Not all DVDs have English subtitles.
In order to ensure success in classroom display of videos with closed captioning,
advance testing is imperative.
