Fall semester begins Wednesday, August 29.

Tell Me More for French and German is available for class use.  There is a poster at the front of the PC area with help in logging on and there is a green card under the keyboard to help you navigate. Please feel free to ask Joan or her student assistants for help. Please DO NOT set up your own account. Accounts were set up by class - you should log in to TMM with your user name and your password is the ID # on you school ID. Remember, the first two letters are capitals. 

Satellite receiver for German - Deutsch Welle; Russian - RTVI, and various Spanish stations is available by the sofa in the IMC. Patrons can choose the station they wish to watch per this list.   In addition, there will be 3 monitors by the window that receive the campus network which will have  TV 5 for French,  Univision for Spanish, AZN for Asian countries and an Arabic station.  These can be viewed in classrooms, the IMC and the dorms. 

Gramática Viva, an interactive Spanish grammar CD-ROM is available for use in the IMC. Please ask at the service desk.


MISSION

The IMC provides support for the study of language and culture as a teaching facility, resource center and media library.  The processes of acquiring language and culture skills are enhanced through the use of newspapers, magazines, video, satellite television, CD-ROMs, and the internet.


FACILITY

The IMC is an in-house, multimedia facility located in Academic IV, B wing, rm 219 comprised of :

  • 26 PC station teaching computer lab (also available for self-study) with Windows XP Pro, Microsoft Office 2003 with multi-language support
  • self-study area of 10 additional PC stations , a scanner with one PC
  • 6 MACs for MLL 495 class use
  • 20 station audio cassette area
  • 12 VHS players, 2 multi-standard VHS players, 3 DVD players, satellite reception area
  • classroom for 25 with a VHS, DVD, computer, dataprojector, overhead projector
  • typewriter, computer printer, copier and transparency services for a fee
  • wireless access for laptops
  • library of language materials - catalog available at service desk and on line
  • Film Library holdings for various subjects (Psyc, Soc, Afam, Amst, etc.)

SERVICES
  • typewriter, computer printer and copier available, transparency services
  • video duplication according to copyright law with a fee (from and to NTSC, PAL, SECAM)
  • audio duplication of course related language tapes for a fee, 24 hr. service, 1 tape at a time
  • Biology lecture tapes/DVDs available for in-house use and overnight rental (usually Bio 100, Cell, Genetics - $2 per night, 1 tape at a time)
  • STREAMING VIDEO FOR CELL , BIO 100, BIOL305
  • satellite reception for French, German, Spanish and the International Channel
INTERNATIONAL KEYBOARD

Advantage- fewer keystrokes for accents, easier to remember.
Uses punctuation marks as a shortcut for accents.
Go to START-SETTINGS- CONTROL PANEL- LANGUAGE & REGIONAL OPTIONS- LANGUAGES TAB - DETAILS or INPUT LOCALES tab.
Click "Change" button if it appears.Choose English (US) as the input language.
Scroll down to English(US) and click on keyboard.Click Add. In the input box,check keyboard layout/IME.Scroll down and select US International.
Click OK- Apply- OK.

Once you have set up the choice for the international keyboard, you still have to highlight it- Click on the keyboard icon the bottom right for that.

The above site will also help you with installing other language inputs,like Japanese & Hebrew. You will get more information about it on our purple help card under the keyboard. You are welcome to make a copy of it - Please return it from where you got it. Also we will have cards with layout available under the keyboard.

MSWord SpellChecker for Languages:

1) Remove "auto correct". Click Tools--> Auto correct options, and remove the check mark in "show autocorrect options".
2) Type your composition.
3) Highlight all the text.(or click Edit, and then select all)
4) Click Tools, Language, and Set Language.
5) Set the language to the appropriate language.For Spanish, use Spanish (Spain- Modern Sort), For French- FRANCE.
6) Click tools,options and Spelling and grammar.Set Grammar options to "grammar and style"(in language)
7) Click on the spell checker logo to begin checking spelling.
8) Reminder- you need to evaluate the suggestions given by the spell checker- it is a machine and imperfect- just as the Engish spell checker is- so don't just say yes to all the options it gives you.
