UMBC Alternate Delivery Program
Presentation of Learning Objects
March 7 (for 11/16/07 workshop participants), April 11 and May 1

As part of the requirements for one-time ADP course redesign funding support, each faculty member is required to present a learning object, module, assignment, activity or exercise that he or she plans to use in the redesigned course (10-20 minutes), noon-1:30 p.m., ECS 023.

A three-member review panel of faculty who have taught a summer or winter ADP course twice will hear the presentation, which is open to the campus and will be videotaped (past presentations are also available for review on the Hybrid Course Design Workshop Bb site).

Faculty Requirements

  • The learning object should specifically address the pedagogical problems (or implications) a hybrid or online course solves (or creates).
  • So others can view it, the learning object must be “posted” on the companion Hybrid Course Design “Practice” site, to which all users have instructor access upon request (send email to fritz@umbc.edu).
  • The 10-20 minute presentation about the learning object must include a peer AND student review to gauge the learning object’s potential effectiveness.
  • Suggested presentation outline: 1) problem, 2) solution, 3) summary of student/peer review, 4) next steps and 5) Q & A.
    • Note: If you cannot present to the panel in person, the deliverable AND narrated presentation must be posted on the Hybrid Course Design Workshop Bb site. In other words, you must use hybrid delivery techniques to solve the problem of your absence in making a presentation about your learning object.

Panel Responsibilities

  • Attend the March 7, April 11 and May 1 face-to-face deliverable presentations for SU2008 ADP funding support and provide feedback on the presentation.
  • Review the learning objects posted on the companion Hybrid Course Design Workshop “practice” site.
  • Make recommendations to the Office of Summer, Winter and Special Programs (OSWSP) about the effectiveness of the learning object a faculty member has presented. If a majority of the panel says the learning object is effective for online or hybrid delivery, the OSWSP staff will invite the faculty member to proceed to the next ADP deliverable requirement. A private discussion board for review panel faculty, and related OSWSP, FDC and OIT staff will be created for the presentation evaluation process.
  • Make referrals to the Faculty Development Center or Office of Information Technology for pedagogical and/or instructional technology support, as needed. If a faculty member chooses to revise a learning object presented on October 5, he or she may present a brief update on Nov. 16, after all of the second round ADP deliverables have been presented.
  • Optional: Consult with ADP participants before or after they present their learning objects on Oct. 5 or Nov. 16.
