AFS Home Directories

User accounts at UMBC have an associated AFS home volume, which is laid out as such:

/home

This is the user's home directory.

/pub

This is the user's shared space. By default, anything here is world readable by anyone with an AFS client, anywhere in the world.

/pub/www

This is the user's public web space, accessable as http://userpages.umbc.edu/~username.

/Mail

This where the user's email-related data is stored, including procmail filtering rules.

/backup

This directory contains a "read only" snapshot of the user's home volume from (usually) the previous night. These backup snapshots are currently made between the hours of 9pm and Midnight, and are what is backed up to tape. Very useful in the "oops I deleted that" situation.
