The MyUMBC is also what's typically known as the NetID or username of an individual.

These are chosen by an individual at the time of account creation; it's not necessary to have a MyUMBC ID to access MyUMBC services, since MyUMBC and many core system key off of other, better, identifiers for authentication and authorization systems. The MyUMBC ID is used for services such as email, LAN accounts, VPN access -- things typically used by closely-affiliated individuals.

New applications should really be ignoring this, and using things such as the CampusID -- and looking at an individuals attributes to prove entitlement to a service.
