The Microsoft patch that causes modem problems is MS06-025 (KB911280). This was supposed to fix critical vulnerabilities in the Routing and Remote Access Service and was released on June 13, 2006. As well as fixing these issues, the patch also prevents customers from using a dial-up connection. It also breaks dial-up functionality in software applications and also prevents scripts from running. Please be aware this is a Microsoft issue, not UMBC modem banks. Symptoms reported to OIT Help Desk:
- Terminal Window does not allow any keyboard inputs
- UMBC PPP Script runs but doesn't connect
In order to restore your UMBC dialup connection you must perform the step-by-step instructions in the following order.
1. Remove Microsoft patch KB911280
2. Prevent Windows Update from re-installing Microsoft Patch KB911280
If you skip this step, this patch will be reinstalled after you reboot your computer.
