Suggested Instructions for Online Assessments

Whenever assessments are posted online in Blackboard users need to be made aware of certain limitations and concerns when taking online assessments. The following are two examples:

For a tutorial on creating an online assessment click here.

1. Timed assessments delivered in Blackboard

NOTE: These instructions are placed in both the "Description" and "Instructions" area when initially creating the assessment. That way the user will see it prior to opening the assessment and in the assessment itself.

In the example below you will see links to graphics of the browser timer that appears when a user opens the assessment.

Close all other browser and application windows before starting the test.

  • Do NOT use the forward/back browser buttons while taking test.
  • Do NOT use the Save button at any time.

Remember to click the "Submit" button at the end of the test.

NOTE: When taking this test, verify that you have a functioning timer in the lower left corner. The timer is required when taking the actual tests. If you don't see a timer, change browsers until you can successfully see the timer OR proceed to the actual tests by self-monitoring your time. If, however, you go over the allowed time, your test will be invalid, requiring you to come to UMBC to retake the test. Remember to click "Submit" button at the end of all tests.

2. Without Timer Feature

Same as the text above without the last paragraph.

Close all other browser and application windows before starting the test.

  • Do NOT use the forward/back browser buttons while taking test.
  • Do NOT use the Save button at any time.
  • Remember to click the "Submit" button at the end of the test.
