Getting Started in Blackboard Learn 9.1 Obtaining a Course or Community Shell
Note: Blackboard course shells are automatically created for every course listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes with an instructor of record designated.

Request a course not automatically created
Use this form to request a course shell not previously created. Please note: for a new community/organization, please submit a ticket to RT.

Making your Course/Community Visible To Students/Participants

Make your Course/Community Available and Setting Duration
This enables users to view and participate in your course/community.

Course Design

Change your Course Title(new)
Edit the course/community name that appears on the myBlackboard page.
Add or Delete a Banner/Change Course Entry Point (new)
Follow these instructions to add a banner on the "Announcements" page of your course/community.

Document Management

Exporting Course Material From Old Course/ Importing Course Material to New Course
Export course material from an old course and import course content into a new course shell. NOTE: If your course materials exceed 250MB, please submit a ticket to RT
Adding a Menu Button to the Menu
Adding a "Course Document" menu button to the menu
Adding Files and Content Items (new)
Adding files and managing content in your course/community.
Adding Staff/Faculty Information (new)
Posting contact information and office hours.
Adding Tool Links (new)
Add tool links to your course/community.
Using Adaptive Release to Restrict Access to Items
Make content available by creating custom rules.

User Management Enrolling Users - Note: Students are automatically enrolled in course shells that are included in the UMBC schedule of classes.

Adding a Student/Teaching Assistant/Co-Instructor/Co-Leader (new)
Learn how to change user roles in your course/community.
Manual User Deletion (new)
Used to permanently remove a user (Student, Instructor, etc.) from your course/ community .
Creating a Group (new)
Divide your course/community into individual groups.

Communication

Adding An Announcement (new)
Posting an announcement in your course/community.
Creating a Discussion Board Forum and Thread (new)
Getting started using the discussion board.
Send Email (new)
Using the email tool to communicate with students/community members.

Assessments

Creating/Downloading a Blackboard Assignment( new)
Using the "Assignment" tool to manage student submissions.
SafeAssign Assignments Through UMBC Blackboard (new)
Set up an "Assignment" link directly to SafeAssign.
Scantron Grade Center Tool
This tool allows the faculty member to easily take a Scantron .csv file and upload it directly into a Blackboard course Grade Center.
