UMBC RedHat Linux Distribution

Welcome to the UMBC RedHat Linux Distribution. The following version of RedHat Enterprise Linux WS 3 and has a number of improvements:

  • Incorporates Latest RHEL 3 Updates as of the release date (currently September 2, 2004)
  • Tighter UMBC Network Integration
  • Improved Default Configuration
  • Improved Security
  • AFS Support

This distribution of UMBC RedHat Linux is targeted towards users who wish to install Linux on their machines in a client configuration. We do not provide support for running services in this configuration. UMBC provides many of the services you may require, like Web services and FTP services. Please consider using these campus services before you decide to run your own server.

DISCLAIMER

This version of UMBC Redhat is provided by UMBC as a convenience for the UMBC community. OIT may provide assistance with its use, but we are not responsible for any data loss or damage that might result in the course of installation and operation. When installing UMBC RedHat, you are expected to take normal precautions, such as backing up existing data on your machine before installing UMBC Redhat. UMBC RedHat was not intended for a dual boot configuration. Since there are number of problems that may be encountered when setting up a Dual Boot machine, use at your own risk. Installing UMBC RedHat will involve replacing the Operating System on your machine.

And please remember, BACKUP YOUR MACHINE BEFORE INSTALLING UMBC REDHAT.

Where to Get UMBC RedHat

This version of UMBC RedHat requires 2 CDs. The ISO images can be downloaded from this location. Please note that to access this page you must have a UMBC account. These CDs are not for general distribution. UMBC currently has a site license for RedHat Enterprise Linux, and all Students, Facaulty and Staff can use RHEL for personal use for free, as well as any activities related to UMBC.

These ISO images can be burned onto CD by various programs. If you have problems burning the ISO image to CD, you may borrow a copy of UMBC RedHat CD from the OIT Helpdesk located in room 020 of the ECS building (remember to return the UMBC RedHat CD when you are finished using it).

Please note that all of the Computer Labs have CD Burners, and that these facilities are available for your use. You will just need to provide the media for creating these CDs.

UMBC RedHat Available at the UMBC Bookstore

The UMBC RedHat Distribution is also available for purchase at the UMBC Bookstore shortly after September 8, 2004. Before you can purchase UMBC RedHat from the UMBC bookstore, you'll be asked to print out a Software Purchase form from myUMBC. Log into myUMBC, open the Business Services menu, click on the "General Software Purchase" link, select UMBC RedHat, click the "Submit" button and print the generated form. For further information, ask the service staff at the Computer Section of the Bookstore.
