The default Ethernet configuration obtains the network configuration by DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). There are some cases where DHCP is not available, or it is not desirable to get your network configuration by DHCP.
If you require a fixed IP adress, you will need to have the following information:
The above information should be provided by your Network Service Provider.
Log onto your machine as root, or use su to become root, and
run /usr/sbin/netconfig. Enter the above information in the
appropriate fields, and press OK. Use the Tab key
to move from field to field. Reboot the machine, and your machine will be
using a fixed IP address.
