Keeping your software updated is very important. Updates provide you with the latest patches for RedHat, including security fixes.
The following packages need some special consideration when upgrading the kernel in UMBC RedHat:
openafs-kernel
The OpenAFS package needs to be upgraded with every upgraded kernel. If the kernel is upgraded without
upgrading the openafs-kernel package, OpenAFS will no longer work, and access to AFS will be
lost.
up2date
RedHat provides a utility called up2date to install updates. Start up2date
and follow the instructions. RedHat will require that you register with RedHat to use up2date.
up2date
Since we are now using RedHat Enterprise Linux as the base for our distribution, you must use
up2date to receive updates from RedHat. It should be noted that up2date
now supports the use of external repositories in the APT or
YUM format. You may use these repositories
to keep packages updated that RedHat does not provide. For further information, please consult the available
man pages for up2date.
