Wireless Access
Wireless networking has quickly emerged as an essential part of UMBC computing, helping faculty, staff, and students enjoy mobility and ease the Ethernet cabling demands that often make it difficult (even impossible) to place computers in certain locations. Our wireless implementation uses
the 802.11B standard to transmit and receive data, all without
the hassle associated with cables and data jacks.
OIT
has reserved 40 wireless access points for use by departments
in buildings not currently served.. OIT will donate the wireless
access point if the department purchases an Ethernet Port
(approximate cost $160). For more information on this please
contact Mike Carlin.
Security Wireless communication protocols are not secure. If you plan to use wireless networking, you should first install the VPN client software provided by UMBC (see below). When you use the VPN client software, your communications are encrypted and thereby secured from eavesdropping. If you can't use the VPN for some reason, you should be sure to enable SSL for your IMAP or POP connections. The following resource pages are also available from the OIT web site under the 'Email' heading: |
Support
OIT only supports 3 brands of wireless ethernet cards: LinkSys, Lucent, and NetGear. If you encounter problems while setting up one of these vendors' cards to work with UMBC's wireless environment, you should first check out the documentation links below, then go to the vendor's documents/support site, and, finally, if the problem is still extant, call the OIT HelpDesk at x5-3838.
The following documentation is provided to assist you in setting up two of these specific types of cards for use with UMBC's wireless environment:
Note that while other cards may work with UMBC's wireless network, they will not be supported by OIT. If you encounter problems with non-supported cards, consult your vendor's documentation or support site. |
