The Juniper Web Based VPN Connection Instructions.
- Open Internet Explorer and type http://vpn.umbc.edu and go to the address. In the “Username” and “Password” fields, enter your email information. Click “Log In” once you are finished.
- Once you login, you will see the following page below. Click on the “Start” button in the lower right hand corner to start using the web-based VPN. If this is your first time logging into the web-based VPN, then it will automatically install the client. Below are a few steps to follow.
For First Time Installations, Continue to Step 3.
Returning Users, Continue to Step 5.
- If you get prompted with a box about the “Information Bar,” click “OK” and continue.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you will get prompted with a message: “The previous site might require the following ActiveX control: ‘JuniperSetupSP1.cab’ from Juniper Network Inc’, Click here to install…”. Using the mouse, point to the information bar and click. Refer to the image below for the location to click. Once you click on the Information Bar, you will see a drop down menu that says “Install ActiveX Control…”. Select this option to continue the installation.

- Next, you will see a prompt “Internet Explorer – Security Warning”. Click the “Install” button to continue the installation process of the web-based VPN.
- After a few moments, it will start installing the VPN client and will automatically connect you to the UMBC VPN network.
- Once you are connected, you will see a box titled “Network Connect” as shown below. You may close/minimize this window. Once you click “Sign Out”, you will be disconnected from the VPN.
How to Tell if You are Connected?
Look at the System Tray. This is located near you computer’s digital clock.
- If the lock is gold, then you are connected. Here is an example of when you are connected.
- If the lock is gray, then you are not connected. Here is an example of when you are not connected.
