Internet Browser Security

Can someone hack into your computer via your browser? How vulnerable you are? Can websites install spyware through your browser?

Install Antivirus Software

Protect your computer from possible virus infection, the anti virus software also scans the email messages - if it is infected with a virus the software will try to disinfect the file before delivering it to the recipient. If it can't be disinfected, it will not be opened.

Download, Install, and Configure Windows Defender

Defender is Microsoft solution for anti-spyware, currently it is free for use on personal and University computers and can be downloaded from Microsoft.

Updating Windows

Viruses, worms, spyware and other malware gets into your computer through bugs in the Windows system which hackers can exploit. To stop this it's necessary to install the patches released by Microsoft on your laptop.

Install and Run Anti-Adware/Anti-Spyware

Spyware and advertising popups are irritating at best. At worst they can prevent you using your Web browser, or prevent you accessing anything other than a page of adverts - the so called browser hi-jack.

Configuring/Securing Administrator Accounts

The Administrator account is present on every Windows XP machine (all users are by default given the rights of an Administrator) but it is hidden. If it isn't secured, it could be another way of compromising your computer.
