Publishing web pages with Macromedia Dreamweaver

You must first make a new Dreamweaver Site. Each step is shown below.

First, run Dreamweaver and Define a New Site as follows:

1. Click on the Site menu button
Select the Define Sites... item



2. The Define Sites box will appear, click on New...

this will open the Site Definition dialog box, as shown below

3. Select the Local Info item in the left column
In the right column, next to Site Name:, enter a name for your new web site
The example above shows the site name 'Site'


4. To the right of the Local Root Folder box, click on the yellow folder icon,
The Choose Local Folder: dialog box will appear, as in the figure below
Create a new folder where you want to keep all of your web site files

Click on the Select button to select the folder you want to use.
Then you will return to the Site Definition box, shown below.


5. If you are using Dreamweaver 4, select the Remote Info item in the left column, to define your remote web directory. This is where your active web site is. In the right column, next to Access, click the down arrow and select FTP (this is for file transfer protocol access method)

6. Next to FTP Host:, enter the server name where your files will be published, which should be gl.umbc.edu
In the Host Directory, enter the directory path, given to your site by OIT, where your files will be stored. This will be similar to the following;

/afs/umbc.edu/public/www/yourdept (you will replace yourdept with your department's folder name instead)

In the Login box, enter your UMBC user name (this is your regular UMBC email user name)
In the Password box, enter your UMBC password
Select "Use Secure FTP (SFTP)"

Click the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box

7. When the Define Sites window appears again, click on the Done button, to complete the Site Definition

After you make changes to your web site, you must Connect to your site to update it.

Click on the Connect button


To edit a file on your Remote Site, click on the file name, and click the Get button to download it to your Local Folder...

After you edit the file, you must click the Put button to upload it from your Local Folder to your Remote Site...

The Put button.


You will also use the Put button after you create a new file, and put the file on your Remote Site.
