OIT Portal Group Releases myUMBC "Beta"
Following the "sneak peek" of a new portal announced Aug. 30, OIT's portal development team has released the myUMBC "beta" for general use and feedback. To login, visit http://mybeta.umbc.edu.
What's New
* myUMBC beta is now running on the uPortal open source framework;
* The new "Courses" and "Communities" tabs link directly to each users available Blackboard sites;
* Documentation, FAQs and updates about future releases will be available on the "Support" tab.
What You Can Do
Our goal for this first release was to provide all personal information and functions available in the current myUMBC, but do so on the new uPortal framework. If you find otherwise, please let us know by providing feedback in the comment form below.
Future Plans
* Study user feedback & performance (October)
* Ongoing updates, fixes, enhancements using this blog as a "change log" (Fall 2005)
* Determine whether the beta or current versions becomes default (December-January)
If you have questions, comments, suggestions or concerns, please respond using the form below or send email to helpdesk@umbc.edu.

It looks cool so far! This was my first time visiting and it was brief, but I plan to take a more exhaustive look in the future. Good job!

Please let me know when UMBC will be switching to this format. It is so much easier to navigate and locate the information I usually need.

I like many aspects of the new myumbc. I would really like to see a customizable start page of myumbc, so I can choose what I want to appear, ex, If on the homepage I want to see academics, announcements, e-mail headers, and listprocs, I could customize that. I also think it would be great if the blackboard courses could specifically be linked next to the courses under academics. Lastly, I like the "news" blurbs (in the left part of screen) regarding academic deadlines, etc) to be completely written out... they have saved me a number of times before.
These are things I would love to see in a new myumbc, but overall, I like what I see!

The layout is similar to the old myUMBC which is good for returning/current students. The site is easy to navigate. The only issue I have are the "Courses" and "Communities" tabs. Like the older myUMBC, the Blackboard related links do not open in a new page...when a user wants to move back to myUMBC from Blackboard, they have to open a new window anyway due to UMBC logging them out. Perhaps the links could open Blackboard in a new window. This is very helpful when navigating through email and course information in Blackboard.

I like the new look. Definite improvement, and it looks more contemporary.
Like other commentators, I think the "Courses" and "Communities" tabs should open in new windows. It becomes difficult to navigate back and forth between Blackboard and myUMBC, which would be a definite plus with me. Also, any external links should open in new windows so I won't have to backtrack into myUMBC which can be a pain.
There are so many other features I would like to see on myUMBC, but the transition from the old one to the new one looks good so far. The Academic profile and UG Progress report are missing. Although the current implementations aren't that useful right now...
Hope all goes well when it goes in full swing!
