| Overview
The AFS
(Andrew File System) is UMBC's central web server space for all
personal and department web accounts. Unlike personal web
accounts
for student, faculty or staff home pages, department space is only
for official UMBC
academic departments, administrative
departments and organizations.
Note:
Student organizations should visit the Office of Student Life's
Student Organization Resources page to
create a club or organization website.
Creating UMBC Department Web
Space
To create a departmental
web account, submit a work
order thru Remedy or call the Help Desk at X53838. You will need
to provide the following information:
- Your department's
name
- The faculty or staff
member who will be managing the department site.
- The Web Manager's
email account and username.
- The web address alias
that you prefer (e.g. www.umbc.edu/deptname)
Note: You may
add other users to this space, including students, but the department
web site owner must be a Full Time UMBC faculty or staff member
(see Owner Commands - Managing Users
in an AFS volume).
Using Your Department
Space
- Initially, your published
web address or URL will be: www.umbc.edu/deptnametest
- This will point to
the actual AFS location of your site: afs/umbc.edu/public/www/deptname
The initial /deptnametest
URL will allow you to build and test your site. Then,
when you are ready for your site to "go public", just
let us know and we will rename the alias to /deptname (we'll drop the "test" from the name).
What's Next?
Once your department
space has been created, you are ready to publish your files using
Dreamweaver or FrontPage. |
