Keeping your software updated is very important. Updates provide you with the latest patches for RedHat, including security fixes.
The following packages need some special consideration when upgrading the kernel in UMBC RedHat:
openafs-kernel
The OpenAFS package needs to be upgraded with every upgraded kernel. If the kernel is upgraded without
upgrading the openafs-kernel package, OpenAFS will no longer work, and access to AFS will be
lost.
hcfpcimodem
This package provides support for the WinModem in the UMBC Linux Recommended Hardware. After the
kernel is upgraded, as well as the kernel-source package, the modem must
be reconfigured.
up2date
RedHat provides a utility called up2date to install updates. Start up2date
and follow the instructions. RedHat will require that you register with RedHat to use up2date.
up2date
An alternative to up2date is
autoupdate.
There is only a command line interface for autoupdate, but autoupdate
does not require that you connect to RedHat or register with RedHat. Follow the instructions
here to install
autoupdate.
