This invention is a biological, sublethal assay for determining the level of
environmental stresses, such as the presence of chemical pollutants in an .
environment. The technology is based on the detection of elevated rates of
the synthesis of shock proteins that are produced in response to physical,
chemical, or biological stress. This detection can be either a rapid test of a
few proteins or a comprehensive detection of many stress proteins.
