The Performing Arts and Humanities Facility

Presentation for the New Performing Arts and Humanities Facility

From: Elliot Hirshman, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

I wish to add my personal invitation to the campus community to attend the presentation on Wednesday, April 29, in Lecture Hall 5 (Engineering building) from 12 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. of the design for the new Performing Arts and Humanities Facility. The building architects are preparing the Construction Documents for Phase I of the building and we expect to break ground in the Summer of 2010. We are also very excited with this being the first LEED certified building at UMBC.

Please join us on Wednesday, April 29, to learn the latest information on this eagerly anticipated building on our campus.

The Performing Arts and Humanities Facility (PAHF) will provide new, state-of-the-art facilities for arts and humanities departments and programs. The PAHF will enhance UMBC's teaching, research and public outreach and will heighten the visibility of the arts and humanities as major components of campus and community life. The PAHF will be home to the Department of Ancient Studies, the Department of Dance, the Department of English, the Department of Music, the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Theatre, the Dresher Center for the Humanities, the Dresher Humanities Scholars Program, the Linehan Artists Scholars Program and the Office of Arts and Culture.

The PAHF will be situated on 4.8 acres on the west side of Hilltop Road adjacent to the existing Fine Arts, Engineering and ITE Buildings. Designed to be constructed in two phases, the PAHF will be a natural extension of the campus to the north, creating a strong relationship with the current campus buildings and enhancing the circulation of the campus. The first construction phase will provide space for the Department of English, the Department of Theatre, the Dresher Center for the Humanities and the Humanities Scholars Program, and the Office of Arts and Culture; the second phase will provide space for the Departments of Ancient Studies, Dance, Music and Philosophy.
