Presentation for the New Performing Arts and Humanities Facility

From: Elliot Hirshman, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

I wish to add my personal invitation to the campus community to attend the presentation on Wednesday, April 29, in Lecture Hall 5 (Engineering building) from 12 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. of the design for the new Performing Arts and Humanities Facility. The building architects are preparing the Construction Documents for Phase I of the building and we expect to break ground in the Summer of 2010. We are also very excited with this being the first LEED certified building at UMBC.

Project Design Presentation

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Facilities Management invites you to attend a design presentation for the new Performing Arts and Humanities Facility. The design process is moving forward with design focusing on interior space layout and exterior facade designs. To keep the campus community up to date on this project, the architect will review the design in its current iteration. Please join us for this informative hour on October 22 from 12:00 pm until 12:50 pm in Lecture Hall 8.

Project Developments in Design Development

The PAHF is currently in the design phase, a process in which the architectural design team refines the building design that was agreed to at the cumination of the schematic design process. During this phase the design team fully coordinates all aspects of the building design including the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, telecommunications and life safety systems to provide a completed design. Periodically the design team will meet with the users to be certain the building is fully meeting the needs of the students, faculty and staff. Budget estimates are fully refined to insure that the construction budget is met. This phase is scheduled to be finished by November of 2008.

Project Developments in Schematic Design

The PAHF has completed the schematic design phase, a process in which the architectural design team collaborated closely with the building users and the university administration to ensure that the future building meets the enrollment needs of the university, provides an ideal atmosphere for learning and research, creates a welcoming space for public and campus programs, and meets the needs of each department or program that will reside in the building. At frequent meetings, the design team presented new plans and models based on feedback from previous sessions, and through subsequent design iterations the final design and shape of the building emerged. The team includes specialists who work to ensure that the design of the PAHF is consistent with its construction budget.

2004-2005

UMBC staff and faculty, working with consultants, developed the Part I and Part II Programs for the PAHF. The programs describe UMBC's existing arts and humanities facilities, define the needs for a new building based on future growth and enrollment, and provide detailed information about all spaces in the new facility, including offices, classrooms, performance spaces, studios, seminar rooms, labs, etc.
