Abstract: 
We introduce an efficient system-independent step-size selection criterion
for the split-step Fourier method that is based
on bounding the local error. In comparison with other commonly-used
criteria, our criterion is most robust. However,
choosing the step size inversely proportional to the fiber dispersion is
most efficient for WDM systems.
